Protective Coating

Provides a durable barrier against UV fading, dirt, stains, and most graffiti. Keep your signs looking clean and well-maintained by making them easier to clean and resistant to damage. Only our 3M™ Diamond Grade Prismatic reflective product offers a 3M™ overlaminate option. All other products use an anti-graffiti liquid laminate coating that offers similar benefits without the physical adhesive laminate.

Both laminates are non-PVC and able to handle complex shapes and curves including rivets and corrugations.

Product Specs

What are the differences in thickness? Where should I use one versus another?
  • .040 - Light-duty.  It’s lightweight and flexible. It works great when it’s supported by a flat surface or not exposed to much wind or impact.
  • .063 - Medium-duty. Stronger than .040, it holds up well in outdoor conditions but is still relatively light and easy to install.
  • .080 - Heavy-duty. It’s thick, rigid, and built to last. Won’t bend easily, even when mounted on a single pole or under harsh weather conditions. .080 is municipal and DOT compliant.
What is the difference between solid aluminum and aluminum composite?

Aluminum composite is 2 thin sheets of aluminum with a polyethylene core. It is rigid, thick (3mm thick), but significantly more lightweight than solid aluminum. It is more sturdy than .040 solid aluminum and would be most suitable for indoor or temporary outdoor applications.

What are the differences in reflectivity?

It’s all about how much light they are able to reflectthe distance they can be seen from, and the angles at which they can reflect from.

  • Engineer grade is a low-grade performing reflective that can be used for non-critical applications
  • 3M™ High Intensity reflective is three times as reflective as engineer grade allowing greater distance and angles and is often used for reflective traffic and road signsMeets ASTM D4956 Type IV standards.
  • 3M™ Diamond Grade reflective is almost twice as reflective as 3M™ High Intensity reflective. Diamond Grade reflective is the best performer foreflectivity, distance, and angle. Meets ASTM D4956 Type XI standards.
What is the protective coating? Is it worth it?

For all signs except the diamond grade reflective, a liquid laminate protective coating is applied adding UV protection, moisture resistance, scratch resistance, and graffiti-resistance. For diamond grade reflective, a clear 3M™ adhesive laminate is applied providing the same benefits but with added durability.

Can I get different hole placements or no drilled holes at all?

We currently only offer drilled holes in the top and bottom center of the sign. We have found this is the most versatile option for our customers.

Do you offer double-sided signs?

Yes. Our aluminum composite signs can be double-sided.

Can I get my aluminum sign in a different shape?

While we don't offer custom shapes on this particular product, you can create whatever custom shape you'd like with our Custom Aluminum Signs

Do you print on the aluminum or is this cut vinyl?

On non-reflective signs, we print directly onto the aluminum. On reflective signs, the reflective sheeting is mounted onto the aluminum and we print directly onto it. We do not use cut vinyl on our aluminum signs.

Are these signs magnetic?

Aluminum signs are not magnetic. Aluminum is a non-ferrous metal so it does not contain properties that attract magnets.

Custom Options

Do you sell banners with pole pockets? What should I know about pole pockets and the ordering process?

Yes, we offer 3” tall, horizontal pole pockets for both our 13 oz and 18 oz vinyl banners. To add a pole pocket(s) to your banner, select the option in the design tool. Pole pocket locations will be indicated by dotted lines on the artboard of the design tool depending on which option you choose. While your design or text can be placed in this area we cannot make guarantees that it will be visible when sewn. We recommend avoiding putting any text or design elements inside the pole pocket areas as indicated on the design tool.

Pole pockets can be included on both single and double sided banners (double sided banners are only available in 18 oz vinyl). Pole pockets can be placed on the top only or both the top and bottom of the banner (bottom only pole pockets are not available). Adding pole pockets will slightly increase the cost of your banner.

Your banner size includes the pole pockets. As an example, a 24” high banner will have approximately 18” of space for your design if you were to select top and bottom pole pockets. If you need an exact amount of space for your design, we recommend adding 3-6” to your size to account for your pole pocket(s).

Please note that adding pole pockets to a 13 oz banner means there will not be the standard welded hem. For 18 oz banners, regardless of whether there are pole pockets or not, there is no welded hem.

Do you sell banners with Velcro? What should I know about them and the ordering process?

Yes, we can produce banners with Velcro. Though these banners are a custom order and in order to buy them you will need to contact us.

Velcro banners make an already versatile sign option into a sign that can be adapted for many purposes. We’ve produced Velcro banners for parades, sponsorships banners, annual sales and more. In all of these cases the majority of the banner remains the same year to year but a certain part is built with velcro so it can be switched as needed.

Banners with Velcro will have a Velcro portion as part of the actual banner itself. Additionally, customers oftentimes buy replaceable smaller banners (i.e. 24”x24”) with Velcro on the back side of the smaller pieces. These smaller pieces can then be swapped out on the bigger banner by using the Velcro on the back side of the smaller banners.

Do you sell banners with wind slits? What should I know about them and the ordering process?

No, we not sell banners with slits. We’ve found that wind slits, which are designed to lessen the impact of high winds on a banner, often are ineffective in protecting a banner against high winds. We recommend that banners be taken down if extreme weather is imminent. If you live where high winds are frequent, we would recommend our mesh banners instead.

Do you offer mesh, canvas, flag or fabric banners?

We do offer fabric banners, mesh banners, and custom flags. If you are interested in a banner type that is not listed on our website, please contact us and provide the details and materials you're looking for and we will do our best to help you.

Do you sell vinyl banners with an adhesive backing or double-sided tape?

No, we currently don’t offer vinyl banners with adhesive backing or double-sided tape. What you can do is order two duplicate banners for a double-sided banner or you can request a custom quote for a double-sided banner.

You do also have the option of using department store adhesive solutions, like sticky tack, putty-like substances or glues, to attach your vinyl banners. The problems with using these adhesive are they’re sticky, messy and hard to remove once you’ve used them.

Are the pole pockets sewn on the banner?
Pole pockets are pre-sewn onto the banner, meaning there is no assembly required when you receive your banner.
Do pole pockets affect the design area of my banner?
Including pole pockets on your banner will not change the designable area of your banner. As noted elsewhere, we recommend keeping text and design inside of the dotted lines that indicate the location of your pole pockets. This is the safest way to ensure your banner displays without text or design elements appearing somewhere that is not visible. If more design area is needed we recommend ordering a bigger banner so that you can avoid putting design elements inside the marked pole pockets while on the design tool.
Are poles included when I choose the pole pocket option?
Poles to display your banner are not included with banner purchases. At this time we do not offer poles. We anticipate offering them in the near future. Suitable poles can be wood, metal, or plastic so long as they are under 3” in diameter. We recommend using poles less than 1.5” to ensure the pole fits without having to force it through the pocket.
Can my custom banner come with a banner stand? Can I make it a retractable or a pop-up banner?

There is no way to make your vinyl banner a retractable banner post-purchase unless you have access to a stand and the dimensions are exactly what the banner stand requires. The better option is to simply buy a retractable banner on our website for your indoor needs. Our retractable banners come with a stand and a traveling case.

Installation & Care

How do I install my signs?

Aluminum signs are extremely versatile and can be used in many applications. We offer many different solutions for installation including mounting it to posts, using nuts and bolts to mount it to interior or exterior walls, zip ties to mount it to a fence, or 3M™ command strips for indoor and temporary mounting.

How do I clean my sign?

Cleaning your aluminum sign is easy and helps to extend its life. Use a mild soap or dish detergent mixed with some warm water.  Take a soft sponge or microfiber cloth and wipe the sign surface down. Then dry it with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. If your sign has graffiti (spray paint, marker, or stickers) and has a protective coating or laminate, use an anti-graffiti removing solvent like a 3M™ Citrus Base Cleaner, Simple Green, or isopropyl alcohol and apply it with a soft cloth. Then rinse and dry as stated above.
