What Are Rear Window Graphics?

What Are Rear Window Graphics?

Rear window graphics (also known as perforated car window decals) are specialized decals designed for the use on the rear and side windows of your vehicle. These decals are made using perforated vinyl, meaning that tiny holes called micro punctures are punctured into 50% of the material. This allows the design on the decal to be visible from the outside and see-through from the inside. Using rear window graphics is a great way to advertise your business or show off a custom design while still maintaining clear visibility when looking out your vehicle’s windows.

Custom rear window graphics are commonly used to cover the entire rear or side windows on cars, trucks, jeeps, vans, commercial vehicles, semi trucks, and any other type of vehicle that has windows.

One-Way Vision

Using rear window graphics and signs is one of the most effective and safe ways to advertise your products, services, or business on your vehicle. When using other decals, they tend to obstruct vision and can even lead to unsafe driving. Rear window graphics allow you to display large messages and still maintain full visibility of your surroundings.

Selecting the Best Size and Design for Your Perforated Car Decal

1. When measuring the size of your car or truck window, be sure to measure the largest width and height to ensure that your sign will cover all areas of the window.
2. Order your graphic 2” wider and higher than the length of your window. This allows room for trimming and will ensure that you order a size large enough to cover the entire window. For example, if your window is 50” x 20” order a decal that is 52” x 22”.
3. When designing your custom rear window graphic, place your design/image/graphic in the center of the decal to make sure it will not be affected by trimming.
4. In order to maximize the visibility of your decal, be sure to use as much contrast as possible between the background color and your design. For example, if you use a light background with a light design or lettering it may be difficult for others to see. Or if your decal is very dark and is placed on any sort of tinted window it may appear washed out. Thus, design and intended surfaces should be considered when creating your graphic.

Simple Installation with No Professional Help Required

Installing your rear window graphic is a simple and straightforward process that does not require any professional help. A set of instructions will be included with your order to assist you. You may also view the installation instructions below or download the installation instructions PDF just below the instructions.

Please Note: This is not a decal meant for wet install, so please do not use any water on the decal or window when installing.

Clean your car window, removing all dirt and grime from the surface. Allow the window to fully air dry before proceeding.

Lay out your decal on your vehicle’s window with the backing still on and make sure it is aligned properly and that you’ve ordered the correct size.

Pull the decal away from the window and remove the backing, exposing the black adhesive side of the decal. If the backing appears to be tearing when removing it, this may be because you are not removing all layers of the backing. When removing the backing, you should be able to see the back of the graphic, which is black.

Place the graphic back onto your vehicle’s window, making sure it is aligned with the markings made previously. Begin to apply to the window, using a squeegee* or flat edge. Start from the center of the graphic and work your way towards the outer corners.

*Available for purchase with your rear window decal

Once you have applied the entire decal to your window, remove the excess material around the edges using a razor blade. Be sure to use caution when doing this to avoid damaging your vehicle’s window or paint.

Care

Care

Perforated car decals are safe for manual car washes and will stand up to most exterior elements. Avoid automated/automatic car washes and power washers when washing your car. To extend the life of your decals, avoid parking in direct sunlight for extremely long periods of time. Remove dirt and other buildup regularly with a damp, non-abrasive cloth to keep adhesive strong.

Q:
What material is your perforated car decal made out of?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
The perforated decal is a thin vinyl material. This material is covered with micropunctures (50% of the surface area) that allow one way visibility through your sign. The material also has an adhesive backside that sticks to your vehicle’s window.
Q:
Will my perforated decal be transparent or allow visibility?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
Yes. Due to the micropunctures that cover 50% of the sign the decal will provide one way visibility. Thus, a rear window decal that covers the entire window will not impede the vision of the driver while still allowing other vehicles to clearly see the design/marketing message it may contain.
Q:
Do you offer other types of vehicle decals?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:

Yes. We also offer clear vehicle decals and opaque vehicle decals. The former is an alternative to the perforated decal as it will be transparent on any portion that does not have something printed on it. Due to the transparency being only where it isn’t printed we recommend that large decals covering an entire window be only perforated car decals. Opaque vehicle decals work great for the side of vehicles in a wide range of uses and business type vehicles. We do not recommend the opaque decals for car windows unless they are small enough that they will not obscure the driver’s ability to see.

Q:
Are vinyl car decals the same thing as car window stickers or car window graphics?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
In most cases the terms are used interchangeably. The more important distinction is the visibility provided by each of the different types of decals as described briefly above. Further, it should be understood that all three types of car decals we offer are semi-permanent in nature. So whether you call it a decal, sticker or window graphic once applied they will not be able to be repurposed.
Q:
How thick are your custom perforated car decals?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
Even with the laminate covering on top of the decal they aren’t any thicker than the combined thickness of a few pieces of normal printer paper. Technically speaking they are .017” thick.
Q:
What is the lifespan of your perforated vehicle decals?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
The lifespan of your decal will vary based on the usage of the decal and the environment it is exposed to. Typically they will last 3+ years assuming they are properly installed and cared for. Nonetheless, harsh climates and continual exposure to the elements can decrease this lifespan. Your perforated vehicle decal comes with a protective laminate at no extra cost. The laminate provides some extra protection against exposure and helps keep dirt and grime out of the perforated holes. We’re confident that if you install it correctly and avoid pressure washers and car washes that it will last for a good amount of time.
Q:
Will the exposure to sun or the elements ruin my perforated decal?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
Our perforated decals are made to be out in the elements and perform well. We’re confident that you’ll find your decal to be a long lasting and effective way of marketing your business. However, as noted above, the continual exposure to harsh elements can decrease the lifespan of the decal. The free laminate on perforated vehicle decals has a gloss finish and provides extra durability and protection for your printed design.
Q:
What is the differeince between your laminated and standard perforated car decals?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
We recommend adding the lamination to perforated car decals and for that reason have the lamination option as the default selection. Perforated vehicle decals with lamination have better longevity due to the added protection against exposure. One of the most noticeable differences is that our perforated car decals with the added lamination have a glossy finish which blends well with the gloss finish of glass and auto paint on most vehicles.
Q:
Can the perforated vehicle decals be cut to shape? Individual letters?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:

There are several different shape options to choose from for your perforated car window decals, including Square/Rectangle, Rounded Corners (1” radius), Circle/Oval, Custom or Custom with Border.

The Custom shape option (previously known, or sometimes referred to, as Contour Cut) allows you to either upload a custom shape to our design tool or have us create a custom shape for your sign based off of your design. The Custom with Border shape option (previously known, or sometimes referred to, as as Halo Cut) is similar to the Custom shape option but will leave a small border around the edge of your design.

There are two things to note with cut to shape perforated decals. The first is that in most cases it is not necessary. This is due to the fact that it offers one way visibility and so it doesn’t matter if it covers the entire window. Unlike other decals that may obstruct visibility and need to be cut this isn’t the case with perforated decals.

The second note is that due to the micropunctures of the perforated decal, cutting will not leave a flush or straight edge. Rather the edge will result in a somewhat ragged edge. While this shouldn’t affect the functionality of your decal we don’t want it to come as a surprise if you decide to choose one of our cut options.

Our recommendation for perforated decals is to simply have them cover the entire window and avoid cutting them to shape.

Q:
What is the minimum and maximum size decal I can order? Are there restrictions on size?
Asked a year ago by Signs
A:
Our custom perforated decals are essentially limitless in size options. Nonetheless there is a minimum and maximum size your decal can be. The minimum is 6”x6”. The maximum is 53”x11998”. That’s 1000 feet! In other words, as long as you keep one of your dimensions under 53” we can accommodate your custom sized perforated decal.
