We provide cyclists and coaches with science-driven, data-centered adaptive training plans based on individual goals, history and schedule. We&#8217;ve leveraged human performance science, as well as the ability to quantify what riders actually do (power meters) to build dynamic programs that adjust as needed to what riders can or cannot do. In addition, since we know what each rider is capable of, what their goals are, and where they are located, we can connect riders with each other according to those parameters. Unlike other competition-based systems that effectively separate people, ours truly brings people together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Where did the idea for your company come from?<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s a real one-night-at-dinner-idea-on-a-napkin story. \u00a0My friend Robert asked me what it is that I would want to improve in the current selection of cycling training software, and I told him. \u00a0He called me a couple of days later and said \u201cI think we can do that.\u201d \u00a0So, we got to work!<\/p>\n<p>As a coach, I was frustrated by the static nature of online training software. \u00a0It\u2019s easy enough to buy a training plan, but what happens when you get sick or injured, or you miss a workout for another reason? \u00a0You\u2019re now stuck with a plan that doesn\u2019t help you. \u00a0VeloPro solves this problem.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13901\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 310px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/vp336280.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/vp336280-300x250.png\" alt=\"Velo Pro Advertisement\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/vp336280-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/vp336280.png 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">The VeloPro app allows bike training customization for any athlete.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>What sets you apart from your competition OR what is your unique selling proposition?<\/h4>\n<p>We&#8217;re bringing science-based training planning to people who would not hire a coach or don&#8217;t wish to do so. Whereas racers often have coaches, and casual riders do not need or want them, avid enthusiasts are right in the middle &#8211; perhaps not wanting (or willing to pay for) a full-time coach, yet wanting training guidance and connection with riders of similar ability and goals. \u00a0VeloPro solves this problem by giving avid enthusiast riders web-based, dynamic training guidance. There are plenty of static training plans available, but VeloPro is dynamic and adaptive &#8211; it changes based on the rider&#8217;s ability and daily data upload. So, if a rider gets sick or injured for a time, their plan automatically changes to keep them on target for their event.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What is one strategy for gaining customers that you have been successful with?<\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019ve been successful with actually handing out postcards to people at cycling events. \u00a0When you can engage people in a targeted audience, it seems to reap rewards. \u00a0The downside is that it requires time, which as we all know is a precious commodity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Is there an area that you&#8217;ve struggled with in regards to customer acquisition that you believe is critical to future success? If so, how are you overcoming that?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, we\u2019ve struggled to get support within the cycling industry. \u00a0I think it\u2019s easier to sell hard goods \u2013 bikes, saddles, handlebars, etc \u2013 than it is to sell something virtual. \u00a0People need to understand what it does and, when they do, they love it. \u00a0Still, the hard part is getting support from the people most likely to understand our product in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>How do you compete with the bigger competitors that are similar to yours but have a recognizable brand and large marketing budgets?<\/h4>\n<p>We don\u2019t really have direct competition yet \u2013 no one does what we do. \u00a0We do have peripheral competition, though, and they have bigger brands and budgets. \u00a0We try to be nimble and scrappy \u2013 street fighters, if you will. \u00a0We get on the ground, hand out postcards, show up at events with our big Signs.com banner, and engage people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What is one of the biggest challenges you have had with your business and how did you overcome it?<\/h4>\n<p>Our biggest challenge has been getting the attention we need in order to grow. \u00a0We have enough subscribers now that we can lower our prices a bit and try to engage the ones who think about it, but perhaps hesitate. \u00a0We\u2019ve had to be innovative. \u00a0We offer certain bike shops incentives to introduce VeloPro to customers they think could benefit from it. \u00a0The customers get a discount, the bike shop makes a few bucks, and we gain a subscriber. \u00a0Everyone wins!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13902\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 310px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Bike-Ride.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13902\" src=\"https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Bike-Ride-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Velo Pro bike ride\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Bike-Ride-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Bike-Ride-560x420.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Bike-Ride.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">For the VeloPro team, biking is in their blood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>If you could rewind time is there anything you&#8217;d do differently? If so, what?<\/h4>\n<p>Start with a bigger marketing budget. \u00a0There is an old joke in the bike business \u2013 how do you make $10 million in the bike biz? \u00a0Answer: Start with $20 million. \u00a0We didn\u2019t start with anything near that, but we are slowly moving on up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>If you had advice for other SMB owners, regardless of the industry, what would it be?<\/h4>\n<p>My advice would be to believe in your product and what you do. \u00a0If you\u2019re not sure about it, don\u2019t do it. \u00a0If your confidence waivers when times are tough and things are looking grim, you\u2019ll only make things harder.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>How do you &#8220;WOW&#8221; your customers?<\/h4>\n<p>By being quick to respond to their concerns. \u00a0Software always has bugs as well as user experience challenges. \u00a0We\u2019re easy to reach and quick to help, and people really like that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What do you think the future holds for your business?<\/h4>\n<p>Great success and, hopefully for our employees, a wonderful and fulfilling place to work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Can you speak to your growth to this point and why you think it will continue?<\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019re a small company, but that has its advantages. \u00a0Being in the software business means we can work from just about anywhere and that our hard costs are minimal. \u00a0\u00a0With that in mind, we can put nearly everything from our subscribers into the continued growth and development of VeloPro. \u00a0We\u2019ve only been around for 10 months and our grown has been steady. \u00a0As more people find out what we do, we hope to change \u201csteady\u201d to \u201cexponential.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Where can you be found on the internet?
