I’ve recently noticed an increase in the number of customer service satisfaction surveys I’m asked to take. You know what I’m talking about – as the clerk hands you your receipt she says, “Oh, you’re the lucky one thousandth customer. You get the opportunity to complete a survey for the chance to win $1,000.” Yeah, right. Funny how the next guy in line is the “one thousandth” customer, too.

I’m not the best driver on the planet. I occasionally drive too fast. I zone out and nearly miss my exit. Sometimes I find myself tail-gating the driver ahead of me, especially if he’s in the fast lane on the freeway, driving 50 mph. I tend to get impatient at inept drivers and I usually say unkind things to them under my breath (I know they can’t hear me. But it makes me feel better). But I don’t honk at people, flash my lights at them, or generally behave in a jerky manner. And I never, never engage in road rage. I’d like to tell you it’s just because I’m a really nice person. But that’s not why.

Remember the Reese’s peanut butter cup commercials from the early 80’s? The hip guy with the shaggy haircut is walking along, bopping to the tunes from his cool Walkman and eating a chocolate bar. Meanwhile, the hot brunette is walking toward him, plugged into her walkman and eating peanut butter from a jar (did anyone else think this was weird)? They bump into each other, and . . . “Hey you got your chocolate in my peanut butter!” “Hey you got your peanut butter in my chocolate!” They each take a bite of scrumptious peanut butter-covered chocolate. “Mmmm . . . delicious!” Then the hot brunette plugs her headphones into shaggy guy’s Walkman and they bop down the sidewalk in tandem.
